The Problem

Nearly 45 million people suffer from chronic headaches in this country. A lot of these are not your ordinary headaches.

chronic debilitating headache

In the emergency department, I see a number of these patients. I can tell you, they do not look comfortable. After making sure these patients do not have a serious cause for their headache, many get an IV and medications to decrease the pain, just to have it occur again, sometimes not long after discharge.

After a while these patients see headache specialists such as neurologists and take medications that can certainly help.

But many of these patients suffer from this condition for years on end. And who wants to take medications long term?

What if I told you that you could wear a pair of glasses and your headaches would be CURED? No needles, no medications, no voodoo magic.

Excited to conquer headaches

In Michigan, there is an optometry clinic that is doing just this and has been for over 20 years.

The disorder is called Vertical Heterophoria or Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD). The idea is that there is an unnoticeable, or in some cases noticeable, difference in the height of the eyes making one eye higher than the other. This condition is estimated to affect as many as 2/3 of the population.

The eyes can have difficulty working together and in moderate to severe cases can cause multiple symptoms including double vision, headaches, dizziness and motion sickness, nausea, and even anxiety.

Sometimes it is easy to spot this. Since learning about this condition, I look at many of my patients in a different way. Are they tilting their heads slightly to align their eyes? Do their eye heights look different?

Most people are born with some form of facial asymmetry. Unfortunately for some, this can cause significant symptoms and lead to chronic conditions.

The Solution

Fortunately, the proof is in the pudding. For patients who screen positive for this condition, simple prism lenses can alleviate the symptoms. What’s more, the effect is immediate upon putting on the glasses – a matter of seconds.

Prism lenses that look just like regular glasses

There are so many success stories from this type of treatment that I have become a super believer.

It certainly is not right for everyone, but for those dealing with such chronic debilitating conditions such as headaches, dizziness, or anxiety who screen positive for Vertical Heterophoria, giving prisms a try may completely change your life.
